Hey, anyone else remember that one show from last summer, Code-E? Remember how good of a warm, slice-of-life show it was with a dash of romance on the side? How you cried for more after that ending that was just asking for continuation?
Well, no you didn’t, because nobody watched it. But it doesn’t matter because apparently people in Japan are awesome and actually did enjoy Code-E – or maybe some higher-up is flexing his muscle right now to get a sequel to a show two people in the world enjoy – because Code-E has a sequel.
It’s called Mission-E, and if you’re particularly adept right now in either detecting either sarcasm or reading the summer previews from a few weeks ago, you’ll notice that it’s been running for about a month now. And as you may glean from the title and the tone of this message, there’s been a distinct lack of, well, presence for Mission-E.
It was the same for Code-E, which was under-the-radar fun, but at least that show was completed by Subbers Anonymous, a group which has apparently dissolved before it could take on Mission-E.
And unfortunately for us that leaves us with one group on the roster to sub Mission-E, Hoshi no Yume, and while I won’t attack them for being a group I’ve never heard of before, I must admit to being annoyed at how they’ve been swept away by the sands of the internet. As in, uh, they haven’t done anything so far. Not cool.
So, like most disgruntled, desperate people, I came up with a plan straight from a sitcom or B-grade movie: if no one else wants to do it, take matters into your own hands.

In blunt words:
Let’s start up a group to sub Mission-E.
I say “let’s” because as much as I can attempt to fansub something, I’m lacking in one aspect: speaking Japanese. As such, I can’t do much for translating outside of dubbing the whole show in ad-libbed lines…which, y’know, is bad. (Unless it’s so bad that someone else decides to right the matter and take the project myself, but I digress.)
I can learn Aegisub. I can grammar / spell check. I can quality check. Whatever else that doesn’t involve direct contact with Japanese, should be fine. Whether I could handle all that on my own, I don’t know; but I’ll try if I have to, at least for one episode. All I need – at least – is a translator, although I won’t turn down anybody with enthusiasm, experience, or both.
To be entirely fair I’m not 100% sure on how this process works or how to run a group, but every process has to start somewhere, and I’ve got Fansubbing for Dummies in my left hand. Consider this an interest check filled with fanboy fire.
So, here’s a way to pump you up on Mission-E:
Did you like Code-E? Mission-E is a continuation of the series.
Did you hate Code-E? Mission-E is a pretty drastic change from Code-E, with more action and … uh … bodysuits.
Do you not care about Code-E? Do it because you’re gay / hetero for me.
(There, I’ve officially jumped the shark.)
And, if all else fails, look at the ending!
It has old-school style, an incredible pan shot at the end, and dancing. C’mon. Like three or four groups are subbing Haruka’s Secret and it has to be because of the dancing.
Convinced? Leave a message here and let’s see if we can get something going.
-CCY

(And for the record, Haruka’s Secret is quickly shaping up to be Guilty Pleasure material, so don’t think I harbor any particular dislike for it.)

I’m just leaning Japanese so I’m not much help, but I did start to listen and write the syllables of the words in romaji. I’ve looked up some of the words using Wakan, and realized that the dictionary used in the program is rather limited. It also does not take into account different dialects, both regional and age of the character. I can pick out some of the particles and can recognize some of the verb and adjective conjugations. I think I’ve worked on about 20 lines so far:
Here’s an excerpt from the .ass file (with some stuff hacked out: [Mission-E 01]

–gah– This is soooooo humbling. I know sooooo little.
The dialog in the office scene is about Katsura-san getting scolded by her boss.
The dialog starting at the 9:41 minute mark is a dialog where the two main characters explain to Katrsura-san about her being a TYPE-E individual…

Wow…just wow. Didn’t expect to get a response that useful. Thanks, Axlen. That’s some pretty substantial work you’ve got there.
Loaded up what you got in Aegisub and managed to time about 3 minutes’ more worth of lines before I got cross-eyed. I’ll probably post the .ass up when I get a majority of it timed – was hoping to make it to the OP tonight but apparently that’s at like 7 minutes in!
So yeah, for you or whoever else wants to translate this, don’t worry about the timing unless you want to take care of that. Just getting the lines in each conversation in order should be reasonably good. I’ve gotten a few easy lines here and there (the one-word responses) but none of the complex stuff. Unlike you it’s all or nothing for me; either I get the meaning or I can’t even tell the syllables.
Up to you whether you think you can continue or not but that’s a great start, thanks.

I myself would’nt worry about the Karaoke yet, that’s just my opinion. I’ll keep plugging away slowly. It would be handy to have a small Wiki where we could toss up the romaji and work out the translations over time. The more eyes the better. It would also allow us break up the episode into sections and eliminate duplication of effort by letting contributors work on different scenes. Hmmm, I wonder if the Baka-Tsuk http://www.baka-tsuki.net site would let us use some space there.
Anyway just some thoughts.
July 30, 2008 - 4:21 pm
Sadly, I can’t help with any of the translation. I would love to help in some way, I have no clue what it would be though. None of the less best of luck with the project.
July 30, 2008 - 9:07 pm
Unfortunately I can’t really help either, though if there is some way I will try. Great to see people trying to do this, Ill be sure to follow the progress and help how I can if needed.
July 31, 2008 - 3:12 am
I have a difficult time trying to catch the words Katsura-sans boss is saying. But I’ve been spending more time on his lines. There’s some words that Katsura-san repeats later in the scene that were said by her boss. But they sound rather different. Her boss really slurs his words a lot.
boss,01:44.37: sen getsu no shanai yon geto
Katsura-san,02:13.28: michishika-san, shanai an koto
At least that’s my take on it at the moment. The ‘geto/’ vs ‘koto’ might be different particles… or not partcles at all. lol.
I didn’t get much done last night at all. atama ga ittai desu / my head hurts.
July 31, 2008 - 9:38 am
Axlen: I was busy a lot yesterday too, but at least I managed to get a Wiki up for the subbing project. Anyone interested in helping or just staring at it, can look here.
I’m in a bit of a rush so that’s all I can say for now, but I’ll upload the .ass file and fill out the table a bit more probably tonight (12 hours from this comment) when I have free time.
Thanks again everybody for the help and support.
July 31, 2008 - 3:27 pm
I could upload my timing raw and audio file. It would give us a common timebase to work from.

I am glad i ran into this site, simply because it gives me some hope for Mission E. for the last few weeks i have been posting on every fansubbing site i can run into and posting on their project suggestion pages for Mission E. but thus far this has been fruitless. I will try to lend a hand with what i can. bit unfortuantely i dont speak Japanese, so i would be useless translating. but if there is anything you might think i can help with. just send me an email. and ill get back to you.

I see OOM released episode 1. The entry on the blog sorta makes me think speed/guess sub, but then who am I to talk :) At this point I don’t know If I want to watch it, or ignore it.
Last night I worked finished transcribing the office scene and started the restaurant scene. I did not try to translate the text on the computer screens though, but that does need to be done.
Anyway CCY, shall we continue or what? I’m not really inclined to quit.
August 1, 2008 - 10:48 am
Yeah, I haven’t been able to check out his sub yet, but he looks like a one-man group, so I was thinking maybe we could join him (or vice versa, whatever) to get the next few episodes out quicker.
I suggested dropping the rest of episode 1 (assuming his sub is good) and just getting started on episode 2 together; you’re right that I don’t want to quit just yet, but I figure we don’t need redundancy on the subs. Does that sound good?
August 1, 2008 - 1:57 pm
I think working with OOM and starting on episode 2 are good suggestions.
August 1, 2008 - 2:45 pm
Im for it too, though Im mostly just watching the project and not actually helping >.<
August 1, 2008 - 3:32 pm
CCY, I have as much experience in japanese as you do, and I would not mind helping out.. I should probably go watch Code-E first though :P
August 1, 2008 - 5:24 pm
You don’t necessarily need to watch Code E to get Mission E, you can watch Mission E standalone.
August 1, 2008 - 6:55 pm
Well I watched OOM’s sub and liked it. It helped me make sense of the stuff I tried to transcribe and translate. A few tidbits were close… the rest not so good. A native translator is best. I’m like the blind man touching an elephant and trying to describe it. I don’t think there’s much I could do to help OOM with my current level of Japanese, but was fun to try..
August 1, 2008 - 7:39 pm
Hello. I have started on episode 2 and if I’m quick enough I’ll be done by tonight or tomorrow. Like I mentioned on the blog I need editor/qc help as I tend to miss my own grammar mistakes. That is what I really need help in right now. If someone can do timing and have some time that would be nice too.
If you can and want to help, email me at oomsub(at)gmail.com. Thanks.
August 3, 2008 - 7:43 am
CCY, I found your site using a search for Mission-E via the new Cuil search engine. I’m glad I did. It’s enabled me to start helping OOM with Mission-E releases.
August 9, 2008 - 3:08 pm
To be honest, I dropped Code-E after 3 episodes because it felt rather slow, but I’ll take your word for it and take it up again – just because I’m gay / hetero for you.
Good luck on the subbing attempt! Wish I could be of help, but apparently being behind with Code-E means I cannot follow Mission-E. Plus, I fansubbed a few openings before, and honestly it was a pain in the ass because my hd was hanging onto its last string of life and it took… about 2 days? Cannot do full episodes, nor *accurate* translations. OTL
