Aside from being an anime fanatic, I’m also an avid programmer due to my love of video games. As such I’ve worked on many stand-alone games in my free time, as I plan to study computer science in college. I’m fluent mostly in Java, but I use Game Maker, a easy-to-use Java-alike with a graphical user interface, to make all these games.

Some of these are older than others, and thus some are better in quality than in others, but I’m definitely proud in what I’ve done, and I hope you can enjoy them too. They’re all fun games, I just don’t know if they’re that easy to understand. Some lack readme files, so when in doubt - press F1 in-game for help.

CUT/OFF is a one-off commission by a member of a game show forum I frequent. It’s an adaptation of a simple game show where you pick between 20 squares, which contain either cash values or the words “SLICE” or “STOP”. “SLICE” squares will cut your score in half, and picking all three of them will end your game, but “STOP” squares will allow you to take your cash and run. Aim for the top prize of $500,000!

This game is unique because I did it as a experiment to see how quick and how well I could do a game in one sitting. I aimed for 2 hours of development time (graphics and coding, planning time spent on toilet not counted), and luckily, I clocked in at 1:59:41. Just in the nick of time! I think that despite the “rushed” nature of this game, it’s still fun for a few plays, so give it a shot!

My first project in Java…which is, let me tell you, a much bigger pain than Game Maker. Still, I imagine it has more potential, and more ‘real-world’ application. It’s based off a for-sale fangame called Touhou Battle Gaiden, a two-player only Tetris clone with special attacks one can use to inflict chaos on their opponent. Mine is similar, except instead of earning special attacks all at once, players gain special meter (that yellow bar) through clearing lines (especially with those S blocks) and dropping pieces, and can execute attacks when the meter turns blue, or green (plus a level 3 attack when the green meter is full).

Battle Tetris has been through more evolutions than any of my other games, with three separate releases so far, each piling on more and more features over the last. #SEMI-AUTO features a large amount of customization options to totally change the way you play Tetris (in addition to the whole “attack” feature unique to this), along with options to reconfigure the key layout and turn on/off assists to help with gameplay.

Additionally, Battle Tetris is playable with both one and two players, in a competition either against the high score or against each other, in four separate styles of Tetris play, plus as many as you can envision with the Custom option. Play standard Tetris, try your hand at Storm mode where an unseen force unleashes constant attacks on you, or try playing Final where the speed is head and shoulders above any other style! Battle Tetris is a full-fledged Tetris game that aims to bring you as many features and unique ways to play Tetris as possible, and I hope this game can continue to expand with my ambition.

This is based on the ABC game show that ran for a week in December, where two contestant face off in a sort of hybrid of poker and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The game consists of betting chips on answers to a multiple-choice question; you can cover up to four answers with your chips, and you must get a question right (have it covered) to continue the duel, but you will lose any chip placed on an incorrect answer. Experience the mindgame fun as you attempt to conserve your ten chips, and pressure your opponent with a special, twice-a-match move that allots your opponent only seven seconds to answer!

This game is one of the more user-friendly ones, with plenty of documentation, a navigatable menu with pictures, and it’s ONLINE ENABLED. Oh, and made in two very painful, but worth it, days. Challenge your friends and challenge yourself!

The Tower: Lift or Lobby?

Based on a flash game with a game-show style, The Tower is a simple game of luck, akin to Deal or no Deal in a sense. There are 42 values - some cash, some special, and some bad - spread out over 21 floors in a virtual skyscraper, in pairs of two to a floor. Each floor contains two doors, with one value behind each; you pick one to keep for yourself, and one to throw away - but of course, you don’t know which! Every so often, you will be given the chance to exit the tower with your money intact; for if you don’t, you might hit the dreaded “-100%” square, which takes away all your money!

This game is a personal favorite; it’s simple, easy to play, and it’s not too bad a looker past the menu screen. The sky dynamically changes with the tower and the game, turning from day to night and adding more clouds the higher up you travel. Plus, this game features five separate modes for you to play: Standard, Double or Nothing, Lightning, Triple, and Hardcore.

BATRacer World Championship

BATRacer World Championship is a text-based racing game based on the text-based browser game of the same name. In BATRacer, you don’t directly control the car, but rather, control its strategy; when to pit, how hard to push, tweaking the setup, and so forth. It’s a lot of work; tuning the car in practice, setting a good time in qualifying, finalizing the setup in warmup, all building up to an exciting race where you kick back and watch your preparation come to fruition - hopefully!

This is undoubtedly one of my most intricate games, with nearly everything being editable in some way, shape or form. Whether it be game mechanics (both above and below the surface) or adding a personal touch (note the drivers on the grid in the screenshots), you can probably change it. Names, driving styles, chance of crashing, length of races, anything. Plus, there are many different modes as well. It comes at a price though; if you don’t play BATRacer, you’ll probably be lost, and the included help file (two large text files) will probably only mildly alleviate the pain though. If you get it, though, I think you’ll like it. And if you don’t, and if you like auto racing, try the browser game first, then this game! They’re both good.

Race to a Billion (Offline)

RTaB is a carbon copy of a popular online flash game (on forums I frequent), Race to a Billion. The latter was online-only, and so I took it upon myself to create a version that users could enjoy by themselves if no one else was online. Race to a Billion is a simple, game-show type game, where players pick cash and special values from a grid of 15 randomized squares. The catch is, they each have to avoid the bombs that each player placed on the grid before the game. This process repeats itself until one person, indeed, makes it to a billion.

RTaB is one of my earlier games, and thus, is a little simpler, with really no menu navigation, or other screens to speak of, but it’s still good, simple fun. In this home version there is one mode, and that is to compete against 99 other computer opponents in the race to a billion. If you enjoy this game, try the online version, made by BigJon at BigJon’s PC Games.
