Kana vs. KyoAni: Saimoe ‘08 [3CD-1] results and [3CD-2] preview

And yet another climactic round comes to pass. SaiMoe is very much a tournament of dreams, not because to outsiders it seems like a bunch of people verbally fapping to imaginary characters, but because it really is an example where sometimes, anything seems possible.

We’ve seen the legendary upturned. The close fights that send a bracket on its head. And we’ve also seen the utter annihilation that a popular character can bring to the table, the 1000-200 no-contest matches.

But which was it yesterday? Shugo Chara and Hidamari Sketch were standing at the edge of the cliff, with two absurdly powerful beasts facing them. Were they able to fight back in time and stun the world?

Or did they fall to join the growing pile of the could-nots in SaiMoe?

“Can you believe in it?” Saimoe ‘08 [3AB-2] results and [3CD-1] preview

The matches continue to be a close fight, and this time, it was the clash of Hanyuu and San that proved to be a nailbiter, especially for Higurashi fans that got burnt once before.

But on the flip side, Seto no Hanayome fans bet all their stakes on this round, with both their characters fighting in separate matches … in the end, both their characters were in the same place in the end of the round. But was that fate victory or utter defeat?

And meanwhile, everyone had their eyes on Kirino of Bamboo Blade, to see whether she really was a force to be reckoned with…

Bamboo Beatdown Brewing? Saimoe ‘08 [3AB-1] results and [3AB-2] preview

And no one stopped to tell me that I got the match preview backwards, flipping B3-2 with A3-2?

In any case, a great fight yesterday; I often found myself checking the interim standings for how close the Haruka vs. Fuuko results were, and if you look at the graph of the votes you find that over the first 21 hours or so, more than about 50 votes never separated the two. But who came out on top…?

DEFCON 3: Saimoe ‘08 [3AB-1] Preview

And the third round of SaiMoe 2008 is go – with the field of 288 girls pared down to 36, a character has to be either very moe, very popular, or very lucky to get this far, with the action only increasing in intensity from here.

It’s a bit too early to declare it all-out war, despite my allusion to such in the previous post summarizing SaiMoe through Round 2; it is definitely time to start shuffling around PVC figures on a miniature battlefield, planning your fights, but open fire at this point will just hurt a character’s reputation. If there’s one thing that will kill any series, it’s hate / revenge votes.

Therefore, although the situation is clearly escalating, as the powerhouses and underdogs become more clear with every round, it’s important to continue moving with caution. There’s no need in a senseless, 1000-300 bloodbath yet … or is there?

Prepare for War: An infodump on SaiMoe 2008 as it enters round 3

The tension continues to grow as we move out of the second round and into the third, where this is no longer child’s play, a domination of the popular over the obscure, but now, as the 4chan SaiMoe ads infamous put it, moe is “serious f’ing business”.

Certainly we’ve seen flashes of the intensity of SaiMoe, in the high-profile early battles, the Maria vs. Rena clash in round 1, the numerous Minami upsets in round 2, but now the big battles are going to be nearly every battle, as we cut the field down to 32 contenders for the title of moe queen extraordinaire, with only 16 standing in just over a week.

Some battles may still be duds, complete washouts in the third round, but as the bigger picture comes into focus it’s clear that it’s now time to focus on SaiMoe not just on an individual basis but also on a large-scale basis as well, going beyond a single match. For whether you like it or not, it’s not just a character’s moe but also a fanbase’s cunning that will decide the end outcome.

It may be a bit unfair, but in the end, moe is subjective anyway, so it’s more of a trend-spotting tool than a simple black-and-white analysis of character merit. So if a character is overturned ‘unfairly’, it just seems like an extra bit of drama to add to the grandiose storyline of SaiMoe, the biggest sporting event in anime.

It’s not the end result, it’s the ride, that feeling of the true enthusiasm and spirit of an anime fan, and I think it’s important to keep in mind such a thing to keep such feelings positive. After all, “serious business” is anything but …

Once again, just like the end of last round, this post features:
1) Results for all the second-round matches
2) List of all the third-round matches
3) Another pile of random numerical stats
4) Bracket predictions
5) Important matches from round 2 and what to watch for…
