The 14th Day of Christmas 2008 – found my music

found my music – Some of the best themes of 2008 anime
Part 14 in the 12 Moments in Anime Countdown

Counting down a few of my favorite songs from anime in 2008; I can’t claim to be a music enthusiast in terms of knowing terminology, or knowing musical theory, but anime music does make up a large part of my playlist, in any case.

Luckily I don’t have to worry about my mass of Touhou music for the purpose of this post.

The Hook: OP/EDs that will have you biting the bait again and again

A long, long time again, in a blog post much removed from today’s, I talked a bit about how the OP of a show was something quite vital to the success of a show; maybe it was the show that made the OP, or the OP that made the show, but either way, if I liked one, I probably liked the other.

And usually the music side of not only this, but both bookends to a show, the opening and ending sequences, is focused on when reviewing these sections. It’s logical enough, given that, like many a person has learned from dating in real life, as pretty as something can look, if you can’t stand it when it opens it’s mouth, it’s a bad sign.

Unfortunately a lot of opening and ending sequences are pretty much the same as every other one in the history of the planet (or, perhaps, anime). Show a quick shot of all the characters in the show, perhaps hint at some plot spoilers to come, pan up to the sky, call it a wrap. For an action show, flash through some fight scenes; for a harem/visual-novel show, show a bunch of scenes of the heroines looking alternatively enthusiastic and pensive.

Usually, after the tenth or so iteration of the same thing over and over, it gets boring.

The 15th Day of Christmas – 10 Anisongs

“Yes, I was really frustrated they took Nagato’s SG out of Guitar Hero III. And Eddie Knox.”

I like to rant a lot about music in anime, first because I’ve been a Dance Dance Revolution addict since the original PSX port, and second because I can’t play it with any resemblance of much more than a cacophony that could have come from Kotomi Ichinose’s violin itself.

And while I’ve said a few times in the 12 (and running) Days countdown that insert songs, or background music can really make a moment in an anime, equally important to a show is the opening and ending themes.

It may not be as important as the in-show music, but the fact is you’re going to hear these themes at least twelve times over the course of a show’s run, and so they better be good. Sometimes it’s all right to get away with skipping a show’s ending theme, but to jump over the opening seems almost heretical.

This is because the the OP / ED animations, and the songs themselves, do a lot for setting the mood of a show. A contemplative, deep-thinking show might have a slow, mood-filled theme, while a action-packed comedy might have a more hyperactive, high-energy song.

Thusly I’ve picked out ten of my favorite songs for bookending anime I’ve seen this year. They range from the fast-paced to the melancholy, from the lyrical to the instrumental, but they’re all songs that I wouldn’t sniff twice at putting on my MP3 player.

Y’know, because anime fans like me were born with no shame.

Combo Continue – Haruhi Threesome

Go ahead, shoot me.

Anyway, this is your typical Haven’t Had Time To Form A Quality Post, But I Post Anyway blog post, in that it’s 11:00 PM, I’ve been home for about 1 hour of the 16 I’ve been up, and I’m not about to let that stop me from continuing my chain of Posts Every Day. Which in retrospect is probably sort of a silly idea and it’d be better to put more time into each post but I’m happy with the way it is.

So, as the title states, after the jump is 3 sections of Haruhi awesomeness to replace your normal episode recap, and not at all any implied hot doujin action (or is there?). No, seriously. Go away, pervert.
