[Rapidfire] Weeaboo Wardrobe: Too many iron-ons, too little sanity

null

The life of the anime fan is a strange one.

While many times I’ve advocated being proud of one’s fandom and not hiding your otaku secret from the public like it’s a badge of shame (unless, of course, you are a cute Mamiko Noto-voiced girl in an average-ish romance show), the way in which one goes around doing brings a little more into question.

There is a difference between being proud and being pompous, for one, as sporting a shirt that shouts in large, gangster-shirt font, “NAGATO IS MAI WAIFU” might be a bit too much. Likewise is a shirt that pictures your favorite anime girl in your favorite state of undress; and as much as you think The Anime Is For Porn Hentai, I personally don’t like embracing such traits.

Therefore, like the suave agent I am, I prefer the slightly undercover, low-key apparel that quite often, is lacking in official merchandise. And like the cheap person I also am, I found iron-on T-shirts to be a nice way to create my own niche and style for anime-flavored clothing.

I’ve also found T-shirts tend to go well with short-sleeve dress shirts, for the impression you care at least a little about your appearance.

Now unfortunately the deep analytical discussion about otaku nature and whether we should be repressing ourselves or not, is for another time (although I feel I’ve probably covered it at least once already), so let’s move on to the objects of attention for today: Read the rest of this entry »

The Informed Fanboy: All the Stats You Need to Know About SaiMoe 2008, so far

null
No, seriously, everything. Just as a teaser, I’ll say I’ve got this much:
1) A list of all the second round matchups, with predicted favorites
2) A pile of random numerical stats about all the shows represented, and how they’ve fared
3) Some of the most important matches in the last round
4) Characters to watch over the coming rounds

And it took quite a few hours to compile, so I hope you can enjoy and use this.

In case you’re not aware of SaiMoe, it’s essentially what you get when you mix March Madness with a popularity contest, where fans pit character against character in a series of matches which eventually determine, in a sense, the favorite (or most moe) character of 2007-2008 anime.

It’s a bit silly, but it’s all in good fun, and it’s great for analyzing just how the heart of the fandom shifts, or for seeing what’s popular, or just for watching the vote totals shift up and down. The canvassing involved, although a little messy, really embodies the intense spirit of anime fans, and so it’s a treat to watch, and maybe, participate in.

You can find out more about SaiMoe and how to participate in the AnimeSuki thread here. Otherwise, continue to the wealth of data.

Ren’ai Round Table! RenAi Blogger takes on the big names in visual novels

If perhaps you’ve been within a few miles of the otakusphere in the last few days, you will have noticed that something quite interesting has come out of its innermost workings in the form of a doujin-esque visual novel from Hinano, named RenAi Blogger.

Now of course, like most things I write, I’m too lazy to fill you in on the details especially given that many other bloggers have helpfully done it for me – suckers – so I will skip to the meat of this review and that is tearing this effort a new one.

To do this today I decided to disseminate RenAi Blogger in a completely novel and unique format that no other idiotic dinosaur could copy and that is in an exhausting multi-round fight contrasting and comparing it to some other popular visual novels in the industry in a half-humorous, half-serious manner.

Of course, RenAi Blogger is only a four-month, one-person effort and so it would be cruel to line it up against visual novels that took dozens of people years to complete … so I decided to set the bar a bit lower. I figured another doujin effort would be fine – but I only had one of those that I actually played, so I settled for picking up another first visual novel, one that was the beginning in a long pedigree of games.

And so there the three competitors sat…at least virtually, on my hard drive.

One doujin visual novel, and one first-in-a-series visual novel. Can Hinano’s top either? Read the rest of this entry »

Finishing Fanime: some more random stories and discussions

null
A comparatively peaceful and relaxing weekend…

Just some random notes on Fanime 2008. Inside, a look over on some of the cosplays (although, no pictures yet), the dealer’s room, my elitist side at Fanime, some random games, and the video rooms.

I wonder if writing a blunt, short, dull preview while mentally dead will help drive more people to read the actual article. It’s an experiment. Or something.

Man, I miss KimiKiss at times like this … although my rewatch of it has stalled out.

Fanime’s Finest (2008) – A rave on Touhou, English visual novels, and zawa zawa

It’s been two days since quite possibly the most hectic weekend of my life, and I think I’ve finally shaken off all the sleep deprivation and worn off that tasty mix of adrenaline and insanity, that anime conventions tend to impart upon an otherwise normal person.

As such it’s time to immortalize my first Fanime (do note that the phrase “my first time” has been beaten to death at the convention already) in literary form by going over some of the more entertaining events that made my weekend and my $55 worth it.

Additionally, in the next few days I plan to make a broader coverage of the convention as a whole with more general info and more griping, but until then I’ll stick with the starry-eyed wonder that makes all the seasoned, hardened anibloggers jealous.

It might be perhaps a bit self-indulging in a sense to brag about all the cool stuff that happened, but on the other hand, I hope I can inspire and encourage future entertaining events like this in the future.

OK, yeah, it’s just wankery. But it’s entertaining and hilarious wankery. Trust me. It’s apparently not just a coincidence I was wearing a Cirno shirt around. I make a lot of idiotically awesome stories.
