Open Fire: Some Unfounded Arguments

It’s been and is going to be a busy weekend over at Eternity, so there hasn’t been a lot of time to plan out another argumentative post. Likewise, the moe fountain has dried up with most of the shows on the hitlist making only incremental progress (ah, the wonders of watching current season shows), so series summaries/check-ups are out of the question.

As such, it’s time to go on a random tirade. There’s not enough material nor time to form a full-fledged post on any of the following vaguely controversial comments, so instead they will just be let loose into the open for people to debate and flame mercilessly.

So put on your dueling gloves and get ready to be offended.

The Meta Effect: How Anime Blogging Messes with Anime Watching

(except less serious-sounding)

Sometimes anime blogging can not only change your reader’s perspectives but also your own.

Not even only from the commenting, or the discussions. Writing about a hobby, somehow, can manage to change how you view it as a whole.

It’s kind of similar to the age-old discussion of “going pro” in a sport or other passion, touched on by shows like Doujin Work. You can enjoy doing something, you can be good at doing something, yet somehow things just shift dramatically when you actually start doing it for a living.

Anime blogging may not be the same since there are not really huge rules to abide by, or money to be made from it, but those who feel a certain need to provide content for an audience certainly are aware of that creeping feeling of “If nothing happens in this latest episode, what the hell am I going to write about?”

Not to say that it’s a bad thing or a good thing that I’m beginning to look at anime in a different way; just more of a statement. Pretend it’s Lucky Star, or something, just something where you feel that need to say “Y’know what I think?”

And, then, y’know, devolve into some random geek-topic related rant. As proof, here’s one of the inspirations behind this post:

“This is one of those screenshots that is just dying to be taken out of context and posted somewhere for epic lulz.”

Although, that might just be a fault of the internet in general.

Emotional Weakness vs. Emotional Dependency

Anime girls are apparently the polar opposite of superviruses. They don’t evolve resistance to disease but rather become more susceptible to it as they go on.

The disease today is, moreso than any harem lead, a lack of an ability to stand on their own, a sort of AIDS affecting the brain. Perhaps it’s too much of a blanket statement to say that all anime girls are affected by such an affliction, but certainly in some harem anime it seems we’re getting less and less real believable female characters and more and more one-legged props.

At least, it seems so, that many of the haremettes today just aren’t capable of standing on their own.

Now I would enjoy being a knight in shining armor just as much as the next guy, but the extent to which characters are becoming socially or mentally, well, retarded, is sort of ridiculous.

It’s part of the reason why I’m not getting into Clannad perhaps as much as other Key/KyoAni works, that from Kanon to AIR to Clannad the relationships have become increasingly one-sided. Certainly KyoAni’s latest work has some merit in the vast amount of nonstandard (i.e. male) characters and their hilarious antics, but it really feels the harem itself leaves something to be desired.

(yeah, Kanon and AIR get spoiled.)

Watching outside the box

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have by any means what could be termed an balanced variety diet. Harem show, harem show, harem show, and the occasional slice-of-life do not a good balance make, no matter how awesome said shows are.

Often times in the American anime community those who are only partially exposed to the True Wonders of Anime, through mainstream, typically shonen hits like Naruto or Bleach, are ostracized for being Not True Fans, for only liking one show or not watching “real” shows, so on so forth.

But, on the flip side of the coin, are those of us who’ve got a master’s degree in Harem Studies and not much else any better? Just because we’re further ahead on the curve (usually) through fansubs and have our communities to agree that, say, Kanon is the best thing ever made instead of Naruto, is that any more right?

Which leads into the real question of today: is it wrong to only watch one or two styles of anime, to only focus on a few shows and genres and ignore the rest?

“CCY, you dumbarse. Of course it is. You should try to experience as much anime as possible and live the true anime experience.”

Wrong.

The Harem Handbook

Not much has been happening round the realm of Eternity. There have been a lot of shows to watch and perhaps blog about recently but nothing really standout-ish that’s worth mentioning.

A lot of the summer series are sort of like American TV or sports. You watch it, you like it, and then in two days you’ve forgotten completely about it. Maybe that’s a bit harsh but nothing from the summer season is One For the Ages; there are ones for those who like slice-of-life (Code-E) and magical girl shows (NanaDrops…or Moetan) and drama (School Days) but the biggest thing that we’ll come away from the summer season with is something not in-anime per se but some of the events (Nice Jerkassery) and dark clouds that are swirling around anime.

As such there’s not a lot to talk about until the School Days finale supposedly airs tommorow, as most of the series I’m following are, well, right in the middle. It’s more of a crunch to finish off everything just in time for the fall season (which looks to be a good season for harem/romance/adaptation lovers) than anything else.

And so we get a post that I guess could be called filler but to dress it up, it’s scathing commentary on harem show cliches dressed up as something humorish. And, without further adieu, let’s get to the funny part already.

Please take note that these may not be 100% factual; it’s based on the small sample of about 10 harem or harem-style shows I’ve followed, with the majority acting as followed
