Track Two: KimiKiss Pure Rouge

KimiKiss is a simple, down-to-earth, yet very unpredictable romance, featuring two male leads, and a strong female lead as well, and their stories of high school love. Kouichi has admired Yuumi for all his life, and secretly, she has done the same, and so it looks like they will live an idealistic romance together. But is Mao, Kouichi’s childhood friend recently returned from France, planning to crash the party with some feelings for him as well, or is she charmed by the strong demeanor of Kai, a socially reserved saxophone player? And Kazuki, a soccer player, has been friends with Asuka for a long time – she has recently realized just how important he is to her, but will Kazuki show more interesting in the cold genius Eriko, who seems interested in Kazuki, if only to perform a romantic ‘experiment’? All these questions and more in one of the most understated, yet enrapturing romance anime of 2007.

Track Two: Kaiji

The story of Kaiji is a mentally and emotionally charged one, revolving around the titular character’s quest to escape from a crushing debt inflicted upon him by the yakuza, the Japanese gang. Kaiji, an anti-hero with a dead-end job, is forced to participate in emotionally and physically testing ‘gambles’ against his fellow kind of losers, in a last-ditch chance to win big…or die trying. These games include an evil form of rock-paper-scissors, a tightrope walk 22 stories up, and even more sinsister events, where the punishment is often too painful to comphrehend. Much commentary on the society of today, combined with complex psychological battles, makes Kaiji a deserving watch for anyone who likes mental challenges with a shot of adrenaline.

Track Two: Minami-ke ~Okawari~

Minami-ke Okawari is the second season of hit show Minami-ke, featuring a different animation studio but all the same characters. Revolving around the daily life of the three Minami sisters, Minami-ke is a slice-of-life show with a strong sense of comedy, mostly physical and occasionally verbal. Haruka is the oldest of the sisters, and is the motherly type – but she has a side that any mafia godfather would be proud of. Kana is the energetic middle sister, and despite acting before thinking most of the time, she can be quite smart, in a manipulative way. And Chiaki is the youngest sister, with a cutting sense of sarcasm mixed in with quite a bit of naivete. All three of these girls deal with very interesting characters in their lives, from gender-bending crossdressing friends, to obsessive stalkers, to just plain amusing personalities at school.

Track Two: Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is the second season following the pessimistic, depressive teacher Nozomu Itoshiki’s crazed everyday adventures at school, and his encounters with the equally demented characters that inhibit his classroom. Some example include Chiri Kitsu, the OCD perfectionist, Kiri Komori, the shut-in, Meru, the shy flamer, and Kafuka Fuura, the eternal optomist. Nozomu’s experiences are never ordinary, as his tales are told through a unique art style filled with insanity and references to politics, culture, and more. Zoku SZS is a show not to be missed for those who like some British-style dark comedy.
