(UPDATE: Another report is in, suggesting that this block is not in response to content but in response to attacks being launched. Time will tell who is right; there have been confirmations that AT&T is blocking /b/, but no specifics as to why.
UPDATE 2: AT&T has issued a statement that seems to confirm this. So Code Green after all, which is good to hear, although they could have resolved this matter a lot earlier if they had gone out and explained why a bit earlier.
p.s. I like how Sankaku gets to pretend it was right all along. Enjoy looking down on the rest of us.)
Well, it’s pretty much as it says. I haven’t seen any posts around the otakusphere yet regarding this (although Twitter is alight) so I figure I’ll bring it up; I didn’t know myself for quite a while, but I think it’s something that’s noteworthy.
Here’s what’s been reported so far, which is probably as close to straight facts as you will get (my opinion follows afterward), if you can’t confirm yourself (i.e. you don’t use AT&T):
This should be a very familiar and a very important issue to anime fans as well; no matter your opinion on /b/ or 4chan, we’ve been through this mess with Equality Now and the eroge IP bannings – or more correctly, we’re still going through that mess – and this move by AT&T isn’t much different, except for the fact that they’re actually taking action. And in blunt form, too.
I’m a proponent of free speech, so of course such a thing is alarming to me – especially if you consider a slippery slope argument (ye olde ‘first they came for /b/, but I didn’t speak up…’), the validity of which, I cannot say … but I don’t think this kind of action is right.
The simplest way to put it is, it doesn’t matter what kind of content /b/ has, whether I support it or don’t support it, whether I like it or don’t like it, it’s still my choice whether I want to expose myself to it or not.
Which is why something like this is, to understate it, an issue. Shouldn’t you stand up for your rights too?
Of course, the argument becomes tricky as it can easily be countered that /b/ is perhaps a shady place to be (on a good day), especially when it falls into legal territory; but at the least, the way in which AT&T is enforcing this block (making it look like it is merely a connection problem) seems to be equally shady tactics; as one commenter said, if AT&T had redirected to some sort of ‘this site is blocked’ page, it would be news in every paper and TV show.
Instead, AT&T is just trying to slide the issue past the public. We should show them that we aren’t that blind.

AT&T… Your world… Censored…
Yes, AT&T have been a big mess up lately with the handling of MMS and internet tethering on the iPhone…Yes, I’m against any form of censorship and I do support Net Neutrality which won’t allow any ISP to censor any content… but as long there is no Net Neutrality, this stuff will continue to happen no matter what.
Anyways, the /b/ board loads fine on my iPhone with my AT&T mobile broadband connection… It may just only apply to broadband users (DSL and Uverse)

At first I thought, “Who cares, /b/ sucks…” But then I realized such a block could spread to other sites like 12chan, not4chan, an other lolicon-related sites.

lol XD
but seriously… wtf is this shit… as far as i can tell, it seems the ISP’s have decided they hold the power to determine what can be on the internet. which is bullshit… yes, without the ISP we wouldnt have ACCESS to the internet, but the ISP isnt the internet itself… yes /b/ has some relatively distubing content at times, but it is not the ISP’s right nor their privaledge to decide who looks at what. and the fact that at&t tried to cover this up means they know they are breaking constitutional rights and know that there is hell to pay for this atrocity…

I use AT&T U-verse for the internet and cable, so this does affect me quite a bit. I’m actually going out on a limb here and giving AT&T the benefit of the doubt. In their statement, AT&T clearly stated that their block was due to a technical issue, protecting its customers from a DDOS, instead of a censorship issue. While the means is not the prettiest solution, I believe the intention is good. While it is quite possible for AT&T to be lying out of their teeth, the company really has nothing to gain from blocking /b/ or any other site. The internet, especially Web 2.0 is a new frontier and regulations and rules will come. We must work for rules are for the encouragement of net freedom, not its repression.

And once again, it NEVER fails with the incessant lying, as lying is a way of life for these hacker creeps. I salute AT&T for blocking viruses, trojans and nasty spider scripts, as that is what the REAL truth is as to WHY AT&T has flashed the middle finger [blocked] to 4 Chan. Why should AT&T waste time and energy in dealing with viruses, trojans and uncontrollable script programs emanating from the 4 Chan site?
I don’t condone censorship and I certainly don’t condone lies “in the name of lulz”. The only thing 4 Chan has proven again and again, is that they are infantile and violent. A bunch of two year olds who go on tirades. And just like an out of control two year old, they need some REAL hard slaps from the school of hard knocks.
Any consequences or denial of internet access to AT&T customers due to NAZI actions emanating from 4 Chan [or any other hacker creeps for that matter], I pray that they are caught, rounded up, prosecuted beyond the extent of the law, thrown in a windowless cell and locked up forever until the day they die.
I commend AT&T for taking the step forward and I sincerely hope that other ISP’S follow suit ASAP. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Hackers cause destruction, chaos, waste everyones time and energy. Normal people on the net are SICK AND TIRED of these two year old tantrum antics that 4 Chan displays on a daily basis. These hacker creeps really and truly need to GROW THE F*** UP.
